Joseph enlisted on the outbreak of war and was in France by August 1914.In May 1915 his battalion was in the Battle of Bellewarde near the end of the 2nd Battle of Ypres where they were exposed to heavy artillery and gas attacks and received heavy losses. Joseph died of his wounds and was awarded a citation for bravery.He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, south of Boulogne.Joseph was the first known Galleywood casualty and he left a wife Alice nee Tarling and 3 children.
